The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution seeking the restoration of Article 370, which provided the region with special status under the Indian Constitution.
The resolution, introduced by National Conference leader and Deputy Chief Minister Chaudhary Surinder Singh, received majority support despite strong opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members.
In the resolution, the Assembly called on the Indian government to engage in dialogue to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and constitutional protections, which were removed in 2019.
Chaudhary stressed that efforts to restore Article 370 should respect the genuine aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir while ensuring national unity.
The resolution also advocated for a balanced approach that prioritizes the rights and interests of the region’s residents.
BJP members strongly opposed the motion, arguing it was not on the day’s agenda. They staged protests in the Assembly, chanting slogans against the resolution.
Despite the disruption, Speaker Abdul Rehman Radha moved forward with the vote, resulting in the resolution’s passage and underscoring the deepening rift between regional parties and the central government.
The approval of this resolution marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status and political future.
