Imran Khan Endorses Corps Commanders’ Call for Thorough Probe into May 9 Riots

RAWALPINDI: On Wednesday, Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), expressed his support for the Corps Commanders’ stance in urging justice for the perpetrators of the May 9 riots.

Speaking to reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, the former prime minister reiterated his call for the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents that occurred on May 9.

Imran Khan endorsed the declaration of the Corps Commanders’ Conference (CCC) and emphasized the need for severe punishment for those involved in the May 9 riots. He urged the identification of suspects using CCTV footage, drawing a parallel with the approach taken in the United States Capitol Hill attack.

The May 9 riots were marked by violent clashes following the arrest of Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court grounds. PTI’s demonstrations turned violent, resulting in damage to government and military facilities.

The government responded with a mobile internet blockade, crackdowns on PTI leaders, workers, and supporters, and trials of civilians in military courts, which are being challenged in the Supreme Court. PTI alleges that the incidents were a false flag operation orchestrated by the military establishment.

Imran Khan clarified that PTI is neither anti-army nor seeking a confrontation with the armed forces. Regarding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision on reserved seats, Khan accused the ECP of disregarding democracy by depriving the PTI of reserved seats. He further alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections by the ECP.
