IHC Set to Address Contempt Cases Following Judges’ Complaints

Two larger benches of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) are set to address contempt of court cases on Tuesday concerning social media campaigns against Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Babar Sattar.

The IHC has consolidated the complaints of the two judges into separate cases, assigning two distinct benches to handle each matter.

One bench, composed of IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, and Justice Arbab Tahir, will handle the issue of the campaign against Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani.

Meanwhile, another larger bench consisting of Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, and Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan will address the complaint filed by Justice Babar Sattar.

Justice Kayani recently requested contempt proceedings against “malicious” social media campaigns targeting judges, submitting a letter to IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.

Earlier, reports emerged that Justice Babar Sattar had also sought contempt proceedings from CJ Farooq after personal information, including US residence permits of him and his family, was leaked online.

Justice Sattar highlighted the breach of privacy concerning his family members, whose identity cards and permanent residency cards were shared on social media platforms.

Last month, the Islamabad High Court clarified that Justice Sattar does not possess dual nationality, dispelling misinformation spread during a “malicious” social media campaign following a letter addressed to the Supreme Judicial Council.

The genesis of this campaign stems from a letter written by six IHC judges to the five members of the Supreme Judicial Council, expressing concerns about interference in judicial affairs by the country’s intelligence agencies. Both Justice Sattar and Justice Kayani are among the six IHC judges who raised these concerns.
