PP-269
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered a recount of votes in the PP-269 Muzaffargarh constituency by May 17.
During the hearing, Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, presiding over the IHC bench, addressed a plea filed by independent candidate Muhammad Iqbal. He asserted that he rightfully secured the seat based on the data provided in Forms 45 of the constituency.
According to the petitioner, Form 47 indicated that he obtained 33,052 votes and secured the second position, while Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Mian Alamdar Abbas garnered 34,588 votes.
The petitioner informed the IHC that he had previously challenged the election results and requested a recount of votes by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
He further stated that his recounting request had been accepted by the ECP, but PPP’s Mian Alamdar Abbas resigned on March 20 to evade the recount process.
In light of these developments, the petitioner urged the court to suspend the by-election in the constituency and instruct the ECP to conduct a recount. The IHC acceded to the plea, ordering a recount of votes to be completed by May 17.
However, the court stipulated that if the recounted results remained unchanged, a by-election should be conducted in the constituency.
Earlier, on May 2, the Election Tribunal at the Islamabad High Court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to submit original Forms 45 and 46 for all three National Assembly constituencies of the capital city.
The tribunal, led by Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri of the IHC, heard petitions filed by independent candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Aamir Mughal from NA-46, Shoaib Shaheen from NA-47, and Ali Bukhari from NA-48.
These candidates contested the February 8 General Elections and subsequently brought their cases to the Election Tribunal, alleging tampering and manipulation of election results. Despite their initial pleas being rejected by the ECP, they sought redress through the IHC.
