First Female Head Appointed at GCU in 160-Year History

Government College University Lahore has reached a significant milestone with the appointment of its first female Professor as the head of the university in its 160-year history.

Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, currently serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, has been appointed as the acting Vice Chancellor of the university.

The Punjab governor has entrusted her with the additional responsibility of the Vice Chancellor’s post for a period of four months or until the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor.

Dr. Shazia Bashir, an alumna of Government College Lahore, holds a Master’s degree in Physics from the same institution, an MPhil from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, and a PhD from the Technical University, Vienna, Austria. She has been associated with GCU Lahore since 1996.

Her academic journey is illustrious, marked by her tenure as the Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics and the Institute of Physics, as well as her role as Chairperson of the Department of Physics. She has made significant contributions to research and development in her field, with over 150 research publications in reputable international journals.

The appointment of the first female Vice Chancellor has been warmly welcomed by the faculty, staff, and students of the University.

In a similar vein, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has also made history by appointing its first female Vice Chancellor in over 100 years.

Naima Khatoon has been selected for the prestigious role, receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, who serves as the Visitor to the University.

The appointment process also involved seeking permission from the Election Commission of India (ECI) due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in effect.
