Efforts regarding interim Sindh CM in Second round of talks remain ‘inconclusive’

Rana Ansar says consultation takes time when there are numerous qualified names

ISLAMABAD: The deadlock continues as the second round of discussions between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Leader of the Opposition in the dissolved Sindh Assembly Rana Ansar concluded without reaching an agreement on the selection of a caretaker chief minister for the province.

After the huddle, Rana Ansar held a press briefing today to discuss the second round of consultations with Chief Minister Sindh.

Navigating the Delicate Process of Selecting an Interim Sindh Chief Minister

Emphasizing the importance of thoroughness when handling a wide range of candidates, Rana Ansar stressed that careful consideration is necessary, given the significance of this critical selection.

” Consultation takes time when there are numerous qualified names,” Rana Ansar commented, recognizing the thoughtful approach required for the process.

The initial meeting between the two prominent figures did not result in a definite decision today. However, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed optimism during a subsequent press conference, underlining his hope for an interim successor to be chosen through mutual agreement.

During the media address, CM Shah also seized the opportunity to showcase his government’s achievements over the course of its five-year tenure.

Rana Ansar noted, in a separate media interaction, “He (CM) didn’t disclose names of his side, and I didn’t share them either.”

As per the constitutional protocol, when the chief minister’s term ends, they must propose three candidates for the caretaker chief minister’s role. Simultaneously, the opposition leader needs to provide an equal number of suggestions within 48 hours of the assembly dissolving.

If a deadlock occurs, the responsibility of establishing a committee falls upon the Sindh Speaker. This committee consists of six members from the outgoing assembly, with an equal representation of both the treasury and opposition benches. Each of the chief minister and the opposition leader will put forth two candidates to this committee.

Subsequently, this committee will have three days to reach a consensus on a single candidate. If this method is unsuccessful, the committee will refer the names to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for a final decision within two days.
