ECP’s decision on upcoming election schedule likely next week

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is anticipated to determine the schedule for the upcoming general elections or the delimitation of constituencies by next week, following this week’s meeting of the electoral body.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sultan Sikandar Raja will preside over the meeting, during which various crucial matters pertaining to the impending polls and fresh delimitations will be addressed.

Highly-placed sources within the ECP have disclosed that the commission has been quietly observing developments.

Given the appointment of a caretaker prime minister and the initiation of the process for establishing caretaker administrations in Sindh and Balochistan, the commission finds it imperative to take decisive actions in preparation for the elections.

The commission is tasked with determining the date for the fresh elections or initiating the delimitation of constituencies based on the recently concluded digital census.

All actions of the commission will align with the constitutional framework.

During its recent fully-quorumed meeting, the ECP opted to remain reticent about sensitive subjects.

Sources have revealed that the commission has also sought legal guidance on these matters from its pertinent division. The subsequent course of action will be determined based on the report to be submitted by this division.

However, political observers express skepticism about the possibility of holding elections within the stipulated 90-day timeframe, suggesting that the entire process could extend up to eight months.

Upon reaching a final decision about its course of action, the commission will engage all political parties and relevant stakeholders, according to the sources
