Islamabad: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) found itself embroiled in controversy after mistakenly notifying a wrong individual for the reserved seat for women on the quota of Maulana Fazl ur Rehman’s Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI). The notification, issued for the National Assembly reserved seat for women from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, named “Sadaf Ihsan” as the designated representative from the JUI.
However, the JUI promptly raised objections, stating that Sadaf Ihsan had never been a member of the party, nor was her name submitted in the JUI’s preference list to the ECP. In light of these discrepancies, the JUI submitted a formal request to the electoral body, urging the cancellation of the erroneous notification and the replacement of Hina Bibi as the party’s designated member on the reserved seat in a new notification.
Moreover, the JUI emphasized the need for the election commission to conduct an inquiry into the matter to determine whether the error was a result of inadvertence or deliberate action. The party’s concerns regarding the integrity and accuracy of the electoral process underscored the importance of transparent and accountable procedures in the allocation of reserved seats.
The incident highlighted the challenges and complexities involved in the electoral process, particularly in ensuring the accuracy of notifications and the representation of political parties. The ECP’s role in upholding the principles of fairness and impartiality in electoral matters came under scrutiny, with calls for greater diligence and oversight to prevent similar errors in the future.
As the controversy unfolded, it underscored the significance of maintaining the integrity of electoral procedures and upholding the trust of political stakeholders and the public in the democratic process. The swift response of the JUI in seeking redressal from the electoral authorities exemplified the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding the sanctity of electoral practices.
