Crime Statistics Unveiled: Karachi Police Chief Provides Insights into City’s Safety Trends

KARACHI: According to Karachi’s Additional Inspector General of Police, Imran Yaqoob, the city’s crime rate stands at 166 cases per day, equating to less than one case per police station.

During a meeting convened to address the law-and-order situation in the city, Yaqoob briefed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and other attendees, highlighting that Karachi’s crime rate is comparatively lower than that of other major cities in different provinces.

Yaqoob emphasized that despite these statistics, effective measures such as rigorous checking, patrolling, and intelligence operations are in place to manage the situation. He also revealed that a criminal gang, based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is involved in kidnapping individuals for ransom.

Assuring action, Yaqoob stated that the police have tracked pertinent leads and data of the gang members and intend to apprehend them with the cooperation of UAE authorities.

In response, CM Murad Ali Shah commended the diligent efforts of the police department and stressed the importance of sustaining such dedication to ensure the city’s peace and livability.

Shah noted that the police force has been equipped with modern technology, weapons, and gadgets to bolster crime control measures. Additionally, he directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ghulam Nabi Memon, to oversee operations in the riverine areas to facilitate the safe recovery of kidnapping victims.

Earlier remarks from IGP Memon on April 2 underscored the necessity for enhancing the criminal justice system, particularly in addressing street crimes in Karachi. He highlighted systemic flaws contributing to the crime surge, emphasizing that blame should not solely rest on the police department, as arrested criminals often get released by the courts, exacerbating the situation.
