Following his recent appointment as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice, Justice Yahya Afridi has called a full court meeting of Supreme Court judges, set for Monday, October 28. The agenda is expected to cover significant judicial matters under his leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the President’s House, where President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath of office to Justice Yahya Afridi. Upon his arrival at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Afridi received a ceremonial guard of honour, marking the start of his tenure.
Several prominent figures attended the ceremony, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and the governors of both provinces, Faisal Karim Kundi and Saleem Haider. Other notable attendees included Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, federal ministers, and Supreme Court Justices Muneeb Akhtar and Ayesha Malik.
Justice Yahya Afridi’s appointment as Chief Justice was formalized following the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which passed with the endorsement of a 12-member special parliamentary committee. This recommendation, put forward by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was subsequently approved by President Zardari, officially naming Justice Afridi to the role.
