ISLAMABAD: On the instructions of Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a cabinet committee has been established to identify the masterminds, plotters, facilitators, and executors of the violent incidents on May 9, 2023.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification outlining the formation of the committee, with Caretaker Law Minister Ahmed Irfan Aslam appointed as its head. The committee’s mandate includes a comprehensive review of the events on May 9, 2023, which involved attacks on military installations.
The committee is tasked with submitting its report within 14 days and providing recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. It will also assess the immediate and long-term impacts of the May 9 incidents.
According to the notification, the Ministry of Interior will offer secretariat support to the cabinet committee.
In related developments, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation Anoosh Masood announced on September 20, 2023, that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and other suspects nominated in the investigation into the May 9 riots had been charged with “criminal conspiracy.”
She stated that nine additional sections related to treason had been added to the cases, including vandalism and violence following the arrest of the deposed prime minister in the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) UK settlement case on May 9.
Evidence of inciting mutiny and planning vandalism against the PTI chief had been identified, including the addition of Section 120(B) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) related to the punishment of criminal conspiracy to all the cases related to the May 9 incidents.
