KP to Decide Chief Minister Today, Balochistan Next in Line Tomorrow

Chief Minister

QUETTA/PESHAWAR: Following the election of house custodians on Thursday, lawmakers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan are gearing up for the selection of their leaders of the house in the chief ministerial elections scheduled for Friday and Saturday, respectively.

In KP, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has put forward Ali Amin Gandapur as its nominee for the chief ministerial position, challenging PML-N’s candidate Ibadullah Khan. The voting is set to take place at 10 am.

Meanwhile, in Balochistan, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to name its nominee for the unopposed Chief Minister seat, with the announcement anticipated on Friday.

During Thursday’s KP Assembly session, Babar Saleem Swati was elected as the speaker, and Suraiya Bibi secured the deputy speaker position. Despite a relatively calm session, pro-Imran slogans persisted throughout.

The PTI-backed candidate, Swati, triumphed over Ehsanullah Khan, the joint candidate of PPP, ANP, PML-N, and PTI-Parliamentarians, with 89 votes against 17.

In Balochistan, Abdul Khaliq Achakzai of PML-N became the speaker, while PPP’s Ghazala Gola won the deputy speaker position unopposed.

These developments occurred amid some controversy, with PML-N’s nominee Achakzai nominated at the eleventh hour and the National Party, led by Dr. Abdul Malik, boycotting the session, alleging election rigging.

Despite these events, Speaker Achakzai expressed commitment to running the assembly proceedings with cooperation and understanding among all members.

The stage is now set for the chief ministerial elections in both provinces, marking crucial moments in Pakistan’s political landscape.
