IHC Acquits Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Cipher Case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has acquitted Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case. The court found insufficient evidence to support the convictions, leading to the acquittal of the PTI leaders.

Earlier today, IHC concluded its hearing on the appeals filed by Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, and senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the high-profile cipher case. Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb presided over the session.

This cipher case, involving alleged misuse of classified information, has been a significant legal challenge for PTI’s leadership. Both Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi had faced convictions earlier, leading to their appeals in the Islamabad High Court.

During the hearing, legal teams for both leaders presented arguments, seeking to overturn their convictions. They emphasized the lack of concrete evidence and procedural errors during the initial trial.

In a previous hearing, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor aimed to present digital and documentary evidence, including audio and video recordings, verified by experts. However, questions were raised about the trial court’s reliance on these pieces of evidence.

The case centered on Imran Khan’s public disclosure of a cipher document during his tenure as Prime Minister. The prosecutor argued that such disclosure compromised national security and damaged diplomatic relations.

Chief Justice Farooq and Justice Aurangzeb raised concerns about the prosecution’s handling of evidence and the diplomatic implications of the case. They emphasized the need for concrete evidence to support the allegations.

Despite the prosecution’s claims, doubts were raised about the reliability of the evidence presented, especially regarding the alleged manipulation of the cipher document.
