Helicopter Crash: Kenya’s Military Chief and Several Commanders Reportedly Die

In a tragic incident, Kenya’s military chief, General Francis Ogolla, was among the high-ranking commanders who lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the western region of the country.

The devastating event unfolded in Elgeyo Marakwet county, approximately 400 kilometers northwest of the capital, Nairobi. Sources revealed that the helicopter, carrying a group of senior military officials, including General Ogolla, crashed and subsequently erupted in flames. The officials were reportedly conducting a security mission in the area, where Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers are stationed.

In response to the crash, President William Ruto swiftly convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council at State House Nairobi. This tragic incident comes on the heels of another helicopter crash in June 2021, which claimed the lives of at least ten soldiers near Nairobi.

General Ogolla, aged 61, had been appointed as Chief of the Defence Forces by President Ruto in April of the preceding year, following his tenure as deputy. Despite some controversy surrounding his appointment due to past political involvements, President Ruto emphasized Ogolla’s qualifications and suitability for the role.

A seasoned fighter pilot, Ogolla commenced his military service in April 1984 and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually assuming command of the Kenyan Air Force from 2018 to 2021. The loss of General Ogolla and the other esteemed commanders marks a profound tragedy for the nation and the military community, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt.
