AJK PM Offers Wheat and Electricity Price Relief Amid Violent Protests

Violent Protests

AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq responded to the violent protests in Mirpur by announcing readiness to alleviate the burden of electricity and wheat flour prices.

Following negotiations with the Awami Action Committee (AAC), an agreement was reached, which the government is committed to implementing.

The demonstrations, spurred by discontent over high electricity bills and taxes, led to clashes between police and protestors, resulting in casualties.

Expressing condolences for the martyred cop and concern for the injured, PM Haq emphasized the government’s willingness to engage with the AAC at any level and address their demands with the federal government.

Despite announcing a long march, PM Haq highlighted efforts to prevent the use of force and maintain public security, dismissing claims of excessive measures and propaganda on social media.

In response to the unrest, AJK Peoples Party President Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin stressed the necessity of meeting protestors’ demands, particularly regarding the affordability of basic necessities like wheat flour and electricity.

He criticized the government’s handling of the situation, urging a more empathetic approach to bridge the gap between state and citizenry.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari called for an emergency meeting to address the escalating situation in AJK, seeking proposals for resolution.

As tensions mounted, mobile phone and internet services were suspended in various parts of AJK, exacerbating the communication blackout amid widespread protests and unrest.

The AAC’s call for a strike intensified the conflict, resulting in casualties and extensive property damage. In response, authorities imposed restrictions on public gatherings and launched a crackdown on protestors, leading to numerous arrests.

The volatile situation underscores the urgency of addressing grievances and restoring calm in the region through dialogue and concerted efforts to address socioeconomic concerns.
