Lahore traffic authorities have made driver fitness certificates mandatory under new measures aimed at preventing road accidents and improving road safety. The initiative will require drivers to undergo medical and psychological assessments to ensure they can operate vehicles safely.
Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi announced the measures during a meeting with representatives of transport associations. The meeting included representatives from bus owners, Mazda operators, mini-goods transporters, truck operators and tractor-trolley associations.
The decision forms part of broader efforts to improve traffic safety and address smog-related concerns across Lahore. Moreover, authorities plan to strengthen monitoring and enforce vehicle safety requirements.
Medical and Psychological Tests for Drivers
Under the new arrangements, authorities will establish mobile medical camps to examine drivers’ fitness. These assessments will cover eyesight, colour blindness, overall medical condition and psychological fitness.
Officials aim to identify health issues that could affect driving ability and increase accident risks. Consequently, the examinations will help authorities assess whether drivers meet the necessary standards for safe driving.
The initiative also seeks to improve accountability among transport operators. Authorities have directed transporters to maintain complete driver records and comply with applicable safety requirements.
Authorities Introduce Additional Vehicle Safety Measures
Besides driver assessments, traffic authorities have instructed transporters to install cameras in their vehicles to monitor speeding and improve compliance with traffic regulations. Officials also stressed that vehicles must have functioning rear lights and reflectors, particularly for nighttime travel.
Furthermore, operators of tractor-trolleys carrying sand and soil must cover their loads with tarpaulins. Authorities warned that they would register cases against operators who violate these instructions.
The measures aim to reduce road accidents, improve vehicle safety and support efforts to control air pollution. Smoke-emitting vehicles will also face enforcement action as authorities strengthen inspections.
Meanwhile, transport operators will need to follow the new directives and cooperate with traffic officials. Authorities expect improved driver fitness checks and stricter compliance to contribute to safer roads across Lahore.
