ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticised JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his recent insulting remarks about Pakistan Army personnel, calling the comments disrespectful to the sacrifices of fallen soldiers.
In a series of posts on X, Asif said he did not expect such remarks from Fazlur Rehman, whom he described as an experienced politician and respected religious scholar. He urged the JUI-F leader to exercise greater care when choosing his words.
Remarks Draw Strong Reactions
Defence Minister objected to Fazlur Rehman’s statement that soldiers sacrificed their lives because they received salaries. He said the remarks were unjustified and deeply hurt the families of martyrs.
According to the defence minister, no soldier lays down his life merely for financial compensation. Instead, he said, members of the armed forces sacrifice themselves because of their commitment to the country and its values.
Furthermore, Asif noted that Pakistan’s fight against terrorism continues. He added that soldiers, law enforcement personnel, and civilians continue to lose their lives while protecting the nation. Therefore, he described the statement as a moral issue rather than a political one.
Political Leaders Defend Armed Forces
Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan also criticised Fazlur Rehman. He said Pakistan Army remains the nation’s pride and praised soldiers for defending the country against terrorism.
Similarly, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon declared the army’s martyrs a source of national pride for the people of Pakistan. Every Pakistani should respect the armed forces, he added.
