Two alleged street criminals from Karachi were killed during a police encounter in Khyber Pakhtunkhwaโs Mardan district, police said on Friday.
Suspects Allegedly Opened Fire While Escaping
According to police, two armed motorcycle riders allegedly snatched a mobile phone from a citizen in the Gujargarhi area.
The Takht Bhai police control room received information about the incident. Consequently, Takht Bhai Station House Officer and a police team established a checkpoint on Rajar Phatak Road.
Police said the suspects arrived at the checkpoint shortly afterward. However, they allegedly ignored officersโ signals to stop and broke through the roadblock.
The suspects allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at the police team while attempting to flee. Police then chased the motorcycle riders and surrounded them near Al-Habib Bank on Malakand Road.
Both Suspects Killed During Exchange of Fire
According to police, an exchange of gunfire took place between the suspects and officers at the location.
Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and died at the scene, police said. Authorities identified the men as alleged street criminals from Karachi.
Police said they recovered weapons from the suspects following the encounter. However, further details about their identities and criminal records were not immediately available.
The incident comes amid continued police operations against armed criminals and street crime in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to investigate the encounter and verify the circumstances surrounding the suspectsโ deaths.
