KARACHI: Trader of important markets in Karachi announced their support for Jamaat-e-Islami’s shutter down strike on Thursday. The strike is aimed at influencing the government to reduce taxes, levies and petrol prices.
Trader leader Atiq Mir confirmed that markets across the city would observe the shutdown. The closure is expected to affect commercial activity across Karachi.
Karachi Traders Alliance General Secretary Minhaj Gul Faraz said mobile phone and electronics markets would also participate in the strike.
Traders back nationwide protest
The decision follows JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman’s call for a peaceful countrywide strike against the petroleum levy.
Hafiz Naeem has demanded immediate relief for consumers and warned that the protest could expand if the government fails to address the party’s demands.
He has also indicated that JI could extend demonstrations to markets and major highways. Furthermore, the party has discussed a possible future long march towards Islamabad.
Traders said rising taxes, higher operating costs and mounting economic pressures were making it increasingly difficult for businesses to operate.
They added that these challenges were also affecting commercial activity and increasing pressure on businesses.
Karachi faces major business disruption
The shutdown is expected to significantly disrupt commercial activity in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest business hub.
With major markets expected to remain closed, citizens may face difficulties purchasing essential goods and accessing business-related services.
Therefore, residents have been advised to complete shopping and other commercial activities before the strike or postpone them until another day.
The nationwide strike comes as JI intensifies its campaign against the petroleum levy and demands greater economic relief for the public.
