A family of five was found dead inside their Karachi flat, leaving investigators to determine what happened before the discovery.
The deceased included a doctor, his wife and their three children. Police recovered their bodies from a seventh-floor flat in Ahsanabad on Sunday.
The bodies appeared to have been there for several days, while the apartment door was locked from inside. Police initially suspected suicide, but officials stressed that the actual cause remains unconfirmed.
Senior Superintendent of Police East Zubair Nazir Sheikh said the bodies were found inside a single room. They were later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital after legal formalities.
“The actual cause of death will only be determined after the postmortem,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing from multiple angles.
Police Investigate Karachi Family Deaths
Police have launched an investigation to identify the deceased and establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Meanwhile, officials are examining different aspects of the case before reaching any conclusion.
The deceased doctor was reportedly the family’s sole provider. A neighbour told police that he had remained unemployed for a considerable period after his clinic closed.
However, the doctor had recently secured employment at East City Hospital. The latest police inquiry is also examining events surrounding his employment and the family’s financial circumstances.
Doctor Had Recently Resigned From Hospital
During the initial investigation, police said Dr Umar had resigned from a private hospital on September 13. According to police, he had been diagnosed with cancer.
Investigators also searched the apartment after entering the locked flat. However, police said they did not find a mobile phone inside.
Police said the doctor’s wife had attempted to sell the family’s oven during the previous week. A neighbour did not purchase it but provided the family with Rs2,000 in financial assistance.
The apartment’s door was eventually broken open by police. Investigators later found the key in Dr Umar’s possession.
Police also said the doctor originally belonged to Bahawalnagar.
Neighbour Alerted Police After Strong Smell
The incident came to light after a neighbour contacted the Madadgar 15 helpline. Kamran said he noticed a strong and unbearable smell coming from the apartment.
He also told journalists that the doctor and his children had not been seen for several days. According to Kamran, Dr Umar worked at a private hospital and was considered a decent person.
Kamran further said Dr Umar had been robbed several days earlier. He claimed the robbers took the doctor’s salary and other belongings.
These details are now part of the information being considered during the ongoing investigation.
Sindh Officials Order Investigation
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar sought details from SSP East following the discovery. He directed the police officer to brief him about the initial actions taken in the case.
The minister also called for an effective investigation and said its conclusions should be made public.
Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General of Police sought a detailed report from SSP East. He directed investigators to conduct the inquiry transparently and impartially.
The police chief also ordered officials to complete the investigation swiftly, based on merit and available evidence.
Postmortem to Establish Cause of Death
Police have completed their initial investigation into the deaths of the five family members. However, the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed.
The postmortem examination is expected to provide crucial information about how the family died. Until those findings are available, police have not established a final cause.
For now, investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the family’s deaths from multiple angles. The ongoing inquiry will determine what happened inside the Ahsanabad flat before the bodies were discovered.
