Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has returned to the twin cities after a reshuffle at the Lahore High Court (LHC). The court’s latest duty roster assigns him to a single bench at its Rawalpindi registry.
The new roster will remain in effect from November 2 to December 24, 2026. It also outlines the division and single benches that will hear cases at the Rawalpindi registry during this period.
New Duty Roster Outlines Judicial Assignments
The Rawalpindi registry will have three division benches. Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan and Justice Syed Farhad Ali Shah will handle criminal matters. Meanwhile, Justice Mirza Viqas Rauf and Justice Muhammad Raza Qureshi will hear civil cases.
A special division bench will also comprise Justices Mirza Viqas Rauf and Syed Farhad Ali Shah.
The registry will have six single benches, headed by Justices Sadaqat Ali Khan, Mirza Viqas Rauf, Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Muhammad Raza Qureshi, Malik Javid Iqbal Wains and Syed Farhad Ali Shah.
Kayani’s Transfer and Seniority Dispute
Justice Kayani previously served as the senior puisne judge of the Islamabad High Court (IHC). He had expected elevation to the position of chief justice.
However, the transfer of Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar from the LHC, alongside transfers involving judges from other high courts, triggered a legal dispute. Justice Kayani and other senior IHC judges challenged the inter-high court transfers.
The Supreme Court’s constitutional bench upheld the transfers, including Justice Dogar’s appointment to the IHC, where he now serves as chief justice.
Justice Kayani later moved to the LHC in April 2026. The transfer reduced his seniority, placing him 12th on the high court’s seniority list.
His latest assignment gives him a single bench at the Rawalpindi registry, despite his former senior position at the IHC and his ongoing legal challenge.
