A joint sitting of Pakistan’s Parliament will take place on Thursday to consider ratifying Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned lawmakers to meet at 11am.
The session will focus on the federal government’s decision to impose Governor’s Rule in the province. Lawmakers are expected to consider the constitutional measures under Articles 232 and 234.
President Summons Joint Parliamentary Session
The President called the session under Article 54(1) of the Constitution. The National Assembly Secretariat issued the official notification.
The joint sitting aims to secure formal parliamentary approval for Governor’s Rule in KP. The federal government imposed the measure on October 11 amid growing security concerns and tensions with the provincial administration.
The government has cited rising terrorism and accused the provincial government of disengaging from counterterrorism efforts. Officials have described the decision as necessary to address the deteriorating security situation.
National Assembly and Senate Approve Emergency
Both houses of Parliament separately approved resolutions endorsing the state of emergency in KP on Wednesday.
The National Assembly passed its resolution by a majority vote. The Senate also approved the measure despite protests and a walkout by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers.
The resolutions endorsed the emergency proclaimed by President Zardari on October 11 under Article 232 of the Constitution.
Political Opposition Challenges the Decision
PTI has rejected the federal government’s move and questioned its justification. The party has argued that authorities should address security challenges through established counterterrorism measures.
Federal ministers, meanwhile, have pointed to the rising number of terrorist incidents in KP. They say the emergency and Governor’s Rule will help the government respond to the security situation.
The parliamentary proceedings come amid continuing political tensions between the federal government and PTI. The joint sitting will determine the next step in the constitutional process concerning Governor’s Rule in the province.
