ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said his party will not block roads during long march. He said the long march will reach Islamabad on September 23 and 24.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, JI chief said protesters would not block roads during the demonstrations.
Hafiz Naeem said rising petroleum prices were causing difficulties for citizens and described the government’s Rs26 billion relief package as insufficient. He claimed several points agreed during talks with the government remained unimplemented and urged authorities to resume negotiations if they could provide further relief.
The JI chief also criticised petroleum price adjustments, saying domestic prices did not decline proportionately when international oil prices fell.
He said the government should have consulted oil refineries after the US attack on Iran in February to address potential supply and pricing concerns.
Furthermore, Hafiz Naeem criticised taxation policies and claimed ordinary citizens faced heavy taxes while proposed taxes on landlords remained unimplemented.
He said a one-percentage-point interest rate reduction could save Rs574 billion and claimed JI proposals could generate savings of Rs3,000 billion to Rs4,000 billion.
Meanwhile, he said JI remained in contact with the Farmers’ Alliance and had also engaged with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
He said PTI had supported JI and his party would reciprocate by supporting its protests.
The long march will begin from Karachi on September 20 through a train journey before reaching Multan on September 21.
Participants will travel from Multan to Lahore in road convoys on September 22 before leaving Lahore for Islamabad on September 23.
The march will enter Islamabad through the Grand Trunk Road, while the party has sought government permission for the demonstration.
Hafiz Naeem said JI would seek public relief rather than confrontation and would not obstruct roads or the Medical and Dental College Admission Test. The party also ended its sit-in at Faisal Chowk in Lahore to focus on preparations for the long march.
