Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned of sit-ins in Rawalpindi and Islamabad if authorities deny permission.
The warning came as the party continued protests against rising fuel prices and the petroleum development levy. Meanwhile, JI has intensified pressure on the government through demonstrations and a planned nationwide strike.
JI Protests Enter Fifteenth Consecutive Day
JI began sit-ins in provincial capitals on August 16 against the petroleum development levy and increasing fuel prices. The demonstrations entered their 15th consecutive day on Sunday.
Furthermore, the party has announced a nationwide shutter-down strike for September 3. JI plans to use the strike to increase pressure on the government over fuel-related taxes.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem accused the administration of delaying its decision. He claimed officials had refused to grant permission for the proposed public gathering at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi.
Hafiz Naeem Warns Authorities of Consequences
The JI chief warned that his party would stage sit-ins in Rawalpindi and Islamabad if authorities blocked the rally. He also said officials would bear responsibility for any consequences resulting from their approach.
Hafiz Naeem said JI would hold a public gathering in Rawalpindi later on Sunday. He also planned to meet members of the local business community during his visit.
Moreover, the JI leader claimed the party had successfully increased public awareness about national issues. He said the ongoing campaign had also helped mobilise citizens across the country.
The party continues demanding relief from rising fuel costs and the petroleum development levy. At the same time, JI has urged the government to reconsider policies that increase financial pressure on citizens.
The latest warning signals further escalation between JI and the authorities. However, the situation will depend on the administration’s decision regarding permission for the Liaquat Bagh gathering.
