Jemima Goldsmith, former wife of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan, today urged the United Kingdom government to intervene for the proper treatment Khan.
Calls for British intervention
She questioned how long Britain would remain silent over his situation. She said Khan had faced harsh conditions for three years.
Khan’s family and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have repeatedly raised concerns about his health. Last week, the Supreme Court ordered his transfer to a private hospital.
However, authorities moved him to Pims, citing security concerns, and later returned him to Adiala jail.
Concerns over solitary confinement
Jemima claimed Khan had endured nearly three years of solitary confinement. She also alleged that his family had been denied contact with him for almost ten months.
She said authorities had restricted his access to books, lawyers and doctors. She cited the UN Nelson Mandela Rules, which prohibit solitary confinement beyond 15 consecutive days.
Jemima said the Supreme Court ordered regular family visits, twice-weekly calls with his sons and access to his personal doctor.
She urged Britain to act, stressing Khan’s longstanding ties to the country, including his Oxford education, county cricket career and charitable work.
Jemima Goldsmith said that Imran khan has contributed to UK’s charitable initiatives in the past and he deserved the UK’s support at this critical time.
