Japanese teenage swimmer Shin Ohashi delivered a stunning performance at the Asian Games on Thursday. He broke the men’s 200-metre breaststroke world record and strengthened his reputation as one of swimming’s brightest young stars.
The 17-year-old clocked 2:04.83 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. As a result, he surpassed the previous world record of 2:05.48, which China’s Qin Haiyang set during the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka.
Ohashi expressed his delight after achieving his target. He said the world record had been his main goal and added that he now aims to win gold at the upcoming World Championships.

Ohashi’s achievement came just one day after China’s 13-year-old sensation Yu Zidi claimed three gold medals. Therefore, both teenagers emerged as standout performers at the Asian Games and captured international attention.
French swimming star Leon Marchand also praised the young Japanese swimmer. Earlier this week, the Olympic champion described Ohashi as a serious future rival and highlighted his strong coaching support and potential for further growth.
Meanwhile, China continued its dominance in the pool. Zhang Zhanshuo secured his sixth gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Games after helping China win the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Carlos Yulo Completes Career Grand Slam
Away from the swimming events, Philippines gymnastics star Carlos Yulo added another major achievement to his career. He won the Asian Games floor exercise title with a score of 14.666.
Yulo narrowly defeated Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi, who scored 14.600 in a thrilling final. His brother Karl also competed in the event, adding further significance to the occasion.
The 26-year-old celebrated the victory and said he had now completed a collection of world, Olympic, and continental titles. Consequently, he described the achievement as the final piece of his remarkable career puzzle.
