Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has said the team is preparing thoroughly for the Asian Games, including a possible encounter with India. However, he stressed that both sides must first progress through the tournament before any meeting can take place.
India and Pakistan are placed on opposite sides of the men’s cricket draw at the Asian Games. As a result, the two rivals cannot meet in the semi-finals and could only face each other in either the gold-medal match or the bronze-medal play-off on October 3.
Speaking during Pakistan’s pre-departure training camp at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium, Hesson described India as the current benchmark in white-ball cricket. He said Pakistan’s goal remains to close the gap and compete consistently at the highest level.
Focus remains on upcoming matches
Hesson said Pakistan could challenge India if the opportunity arises during the tournament. He pointed to Pakistan’s performance in the Asia Cup final as evidence that the team can place strong sides under pressure.
Despite the excitement surrounding a potential showdown, the coach urged caution. He noted that several matches remain before either team can think about a final or medal-deciding contest.
The Asian Games squad combines players from the Pakistan Shaheens and the national team. Therefore, the event provides an opportunity to evaluate emerging talent in a competitive international environment.
Farhan leadership role remains undecided
Hesson also addressed Sahibzada Farhan’s appointment as captain for the tournament. He said the role offers Farhan valuable leadership experience and a chance to develop his skills.
However, Hesson clarified that the appointment does not automatically guarantee a long-term captaincy position. He explained that future leadership decisions would be made by the selection committee and the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The coach added that he has enjoyed working with Farhan during the training camp. He expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation ahead of the Asian Games challenge.
