A company in Japan has created a simple, easy-to-install prayer space that helps businesses and tourist spots better serve Muslim guests. The innovative product, named โPrayer Space,โ comes from OM Kiki Co. in Soja, Okayama Prefecture. Officials launched sales in December after a personal experience inspired the idea.
The developer got the concept during a trip with his Malaysian Muslim friend. The friend struggled to find a suitable place to pray, which highlighted a real gap in local facilities. This compact wooden room stands 180 centimetres tall with a 150 cm by 150 cm floor. It features a waterproof, easy-to-clean mat for ritual washing and a rotatable qibla marker on the ceiling that points toward Makkah.
Practical Design Meets Growing Demand from Tourists
Transitioning from basic needs to thoughtful details, the room allows Muslims to perform prayers comfortably multiple times a day. Many tourist destinations in Japan now attract increasing numbers of visitors from Muslim countries. A survey of Muslim travellers showed that 72 percent of men and 79 percent of women consider available prayer facilities a key factor when choosing destinations.
The company hopes this affordable solution will make Japan more welcoming. It also aims to create friendlier work environments for Muslim residents and employees in local areas, starting with Okayama Prefecture.
Positive Step Towards Inclusivity and Tourism Growth
Businesses and tourist sites can now install these rooms quickly without major construction. This development reflects Japanโs efforts to accommodate diverse visitors while boosting its appeal as a global travel destination. Many in the Muslim community appreciate such initiatives that respect their religious needs.
Overall, this invention shows how small, practical innovations can bridge cultural gaps and support inclusive tourism. As more places adopt the prayer space, Japan strengthens its reputation for hospitality and thoughtful planning.
