Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan at a meeting between the Regional Four (R4) and European Three (E3) groups in Istanbul on Friday, October 23.
The meeting, hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, will bring together representatives from Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Britain, France and Germany. It marks the first meeting between the two groups in this format.
Regional Security Tops Meeting Agenda
According to reports from Pakistani and Turkish foreign ministry sources, the discussions will cover several pressing international issues. These include the Palestinian situation, developments in Yemen and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ministers will also explore ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Furthermore, they are expected to discuss opportunities for stronger cooperation and diplomatic coordination among the participating countries.
Türkiye to Host First R4-E3 Talks
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will chair the meeting and lead discussions on regional challenges. He is expected to call for increased international pressure on Israel over settlement expansion and alleged settler violence.
Fidan will also highlight security concerns involving Saudi Arabia and attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement. In addition, he will stress the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
The Turkish minister is also expected to address concerns about the Russia-Ukraine conflict spreading towards the Black Sea.
R4 and E3 Groups Seek Greater Coordination
The E3 grouping comprises Britain, France and Germany. It was established more than two decades ago to coordinate diplomatic efforts concerning Iran’s nuclear programme.
Meanwhile, the R4 group brings together Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It was formed this year to strengthen consultations on regional and international matters.
The Istanbul meeting will provide both groups with an opportunity to exchange views and identify areas for cooperation on shared security and diplomatic concerns.
