Israeli opposition leaders have called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to leave office following US midterm elections. They warned that his continued leadership could damage Israel’s international standing and relations with Washington.
Yair Golan, leader of the opposition Democrats party, criticised Netanyahu after Democrats secured major gains. He said the results exposed Netanyahu’s declining support among both Democrats and Republicans.
Golan warned that Netanyahu’s continued partnership with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir could create serious consequences. He said their leadership could expose Israel to international sanctions, isolation and confrontation with the United States.
He also called for a new government capable of restoring Israel’s international standing. According to Golan, the country needs long-term political arrangements and stronger security policies.
Opposition Leaders Reject Netanyahu’s Continued Leadership
Golan described Netanyahu’s leadership as a growing threat to Israel’s future. He urged opposition parties to act quickly and establish a government of change.
Meanwhile, Israeli lawmaker Gilad Kariv also demanded Netanyahu’s departure. Kariv accused the prime minister of damaging relations with the Democratic Party and significant sections of the Republican Party.
He rejected proposals for a unity government under Netanyahu’s leadership. Kariv insisted that Netanyahu should no longer lead the country.
The statements followed Democratic victories in both chambers of the US Congress. The results dealt a setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
Netanyahu Faces Political Challenges at Home
Trump has maintained support for Netanyahu, whose political future remains uncertain. Israeli parties are currently navigating efforts to establish the country’s next government.
The recent election left no political bloc with an outright parliamentary majority. Netanyahu’s bloc secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset.
Jewish opposition parties won 48 seats, while Arab parties secured 19 seats. A government needs support from at least 61 lawmakers to command a parliamentary majority.
The opposition now faces the challenge of building a coalition capable of replacing Netanyahu. However, disagreements over potential partnerships with Arab parties could complicate negotiations.
