Islamabad Police have registered criminal cases against 225 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers following demonstrations held to mark three years since the imprisonment of the party’s founder, Imran Khan.
According to police, the First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged at the Karpa and I-9 police stations. The cases were registered under Section 144 and other relevant legal provisions.
The protests took place despite restrictions on public gatherings in the federal capital. Consequently, police initiated legal proceedings against both identified and unidentified participants.
FIRs Name 25 Individuals, More Than 200 Unidentified Protesters
According to the FIRs, 25 individuals have been named as accused. In addition, the cases include more than 200 unidentified protesters.
Police stated that demonstrators gathered on a public road during the rallies. As a result, traffic flow was disrupted in the affected areas.
Authorities maintained that the protesters had been informed that Section 144 was already in force across Islamabad. Under these restrictions, public meetings, rallies, and demonstrations were prohibited.
Police Cite Section 144 Violations and Road Blockades
According to the police version, the protesters continued their demonstration despite being informed about the restrictions.
The FIRs allege that participants blocked public roads and disrupted normal traffic movement. Police also claimed that the gathering violated Section 144, prompting legal action.
Furthermore, authorities stated that the cases include charges related to obstructing public officials while they performed their official duties.
FIRs Allege Clashes With Police Personnel
The FIRs further allege that some protesters scuffled with police officers during the demonstrations.
According to police, some participants tore police uniforms and threw stones at security personnel. The cases also state that demonstrators raised slogans against the government during the protest.
Police alleged that these actions contributed to a deterioration in the law and order situation in the federal capital.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Based on these allegations, Islamabad Police registered cases under provisions relating to the violation of Section 144 and obstruction of public officials. Other applicable offences have also been included in the FIRs.
The legal proceedings cover both the named accused and the unidentified protesters mentioned in the cases. Authorities have not announced any further details regarding arrests or additional investigations.
