ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has made the ongoing direct recruitment process for inspectors in Islamabad Police. The IHC order will be valid till the issuance of a final decision in a case challenging the legality of the appointments.
Justice Ayyaz Shaukat issued the order while hearing a petition filed by 39 serving sub-inspectors who challenged a Ministry of Interior notification and a recruitment advertisement issued by the Public Service Commission.
The petitioners argued that direct recruitment to the inspector rank violated the Police Order 2002, which they maintained applies to the Islamabad Capital Territory. Their counsel also referred to a 2019 IHC judgment recognising the law’s applicability in the federal capital.
According to the petitioners, the existing legal framework does not permit direct appointments to the inspector position through the disputed recruitment process. They warned that continuing the hiring process could lead to appointments that violate established legal procedures.
The court issued notices to the interior secretary, Islamabad police chief, additional inspector general, chief commissioner, deputy secretary of the Interior Ministry and the Public Service Commission, seeking their responses. Notices were also ordered for the attorney general and Islamabad advocate general.
The court directed that all steps taken in the recruitment process would remain subject to the final outcome of the petition.
The IHC has scheduled the next hearing for October 28, when it will further examine the legal questions surrounding the appointments. The case could have implications for recruitment procedures and the interpretation of police service regulations in Islamabad.
