Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for striking a vessel attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions around one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
The Guards said the vessel caught fire on Monday after attempting to pass through the waterway without following Iranian instructions. The incident comes as maritime security concerns grow amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Iran Says Vessel Ignored Naval Warnings
According to a statement published on the IRGC’s official news platform, the targeted vessel was a supertanker travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Guards claimed the ship attempted to cross the area with its transponders switched off, making it harder for authorities to track its movements. Iranian officials also alleged that the vessel ignored warnings from the Guards’ Navy. Iranian naval commander Ali Ozmaei had previously warned that ships disabling their transponders to avoid detection would be treated as hostile and face a severe response.
The IRGC did not identify the vessel or provide further details about its ownership, flag or the extent of the damage.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Major Flashpoint
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as a vital route for international energy shipments. Disruptions in the waterway can affect oil supplies, shipping costs and global energy markets.
Iran has imposed restrictions on maritime traffic since the conflict began in February, while the United States has established a counter-blockade of Iranian ports. US forces have also escorted vessels travelling through the region. The competing restrictions have increased uncertainty for shipping companies and raised concerns about the safety of commercial vessels.
Multiple Maritime Incidents Reported
The British maritime security agency UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported four separate incidents involving vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.
The reports came amid repeated attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the region. However, the available information did not establish whether all the incidents were connected or identify the parties responsible for each one.
The latest IRGC claim adds to concerns about further disruption along the strategic waterway.
Global Shipping Faces Growing Uncertainty
The situation remains tense as Iran continues enforcing its restrictions and the United States maintains pressure on Iranian ports. Shipping operators face difficult decisions over routes, tracking requirements and security risks. Further incidents could disrupt energy transportation and increase uncertainty across international markets.
Authorities have yet to release the vessel’s identity or confirm additional details about casualties and damage.
