TEHRAN: Iran has said its airlines will continue operating international flights as scheduled from the beginning of October despite US warnings that foreign companies servicing Iranian carriers could face sanctions, according to the ISNA news agency.
Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization said authorities had not issued instructions to suspend overseas services and that Iranian airlines were continuing their international operations.
A spokesperson for the organisation said no foreign flights operated by Iranian carriers had been cancelled so far. Furthermore, the official said airlines would inform passengers in advance if schedules changed.
Tehran Says No Order Issued to Halt Overseas Flights
The statement follows warnings from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Iranian airlines could face severe restrictions on their ability to operate internationally from September 23.
Bessent said foreign companies continuing to provide Iranian carriers with fuel, landing services or ticketing could face US financial consequences.
Earlier this month, the US Treasury announced sanctions targeting 27 Iranian airlines as Washington intensified economic pressure on Tehran’s aviation sector.
However, Iranian aviation authorities maintain that the measures have not resulted in instructions to stop international flights.
US Pressure Targets Foreign Aviation Services
The effectiveness of Washington’s restrictions will depend partly on whether airports, fuel suppliers, ticketing companies and other service providers outside Iran continue dealing with sanctioned Iranian carriers.
Consequently, Iranian airlines could face operational difficulties even if Tehran itself does not suspend overseas flights.
Nevertheless, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization said existing services remained on schedule at the time of its statement.
The organisation also sought to reassure travellers that authorities would provide advance notice if sanctions or operational developments forced airlines to change their schedules.
The competing statements underline the uncertainty surrounding Iranian international aviation as Washington seeks to restrict carriers through sanctions while Tehran insists overseas operations will continue.
