A top-level delegation from Iran came to Islamabad early on Saturday morning, with a view to carrying out crucial negotiations between the two sides regarding a permanent ceasefire in the Middle East.
The delegation is led by the speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf. It also includes the countryโs foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi. The Pakistanis gave a very warm welcome to the delegation when it landed at the airport.
Pakistan Plays Key Role in Brokering Dialogue
Pakistani diplomacy is again playing the role of an intermediary for both parties. The talks have been referred to by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as an ultimate attempt at ending a week-long bloodshed in the Middle East.
Furthermore, these negotiations come after a two-week ceasefire imposed by US President Donald Trump. This came amid an intense confrontation with Tehran. Despite allegations of non-compliance with the truce by each side, both states nevertheless agree to engage in talks in Islamabad.
At the same time, high hopes are placed on these discussions. In particular, Ghalibaf stated that it is crucial for the US to unfreeze Iranian funds and observe a truce in Lebanon. He said this is necessary if they want to see tangible results.
On the opposite side, JD Vance is going to head an American delegation. He has warned against any possible deceit toward his nation.
High Stakes Surround Ceasefire Efforts
Tensions have increased considerably since the war started on February 28, with attacks against Iranian leadership and infrastructure. Iran retaliated by blocking maritime trade lines and conducting attacks within surrounding areas.
However, with the temporary ceasefire arranged by Pakistan on April 8, both sides can now meet face to face. This ceasefire lasted two weeks.
Each side is carrying its own agenda. The US government is advocating a 15-point proposal, while Iran is presenting a 10-point counter-proposal. The international community is keenly observing Pakistanโs efforts to convert this ceasefire into a permanent peace treaty.
