Officials familiar with the matter said investigators have not reached a final conclusion about Russia’s possible involvement. However, they are reviewing the effectiveness and precision of the attacks, along with Russia’s previous technical support for Iran.
The investigation highlights growing concerns about cooperation between Moscow and Tehran as tensions between Iran and the United States continue.
Intelligence Officials Examine Possible Russian Assistance
According to sources familiar with US intelligence assessments, analysts are studying whether Russia helped Iran target sensitive American locations.
Previous reports have indicated that Russia provided technical and targeting support for Iranian attacks against US interests in the Gulf. However, the investigation into possible Russian involvement in strikes against CIA facilities has not been publicly disclosed before.
At least two CIA locations were reportedly targeted in March. These included a CIA station inside the US embassy compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and another facility in eastern Iraq.
Some sources also suggested that additional CIA-related locations may have been affected. However, they did not provide further details due to security concerns.
Report Claims Russian Technology Improved Iranian Drones
A Western intelligence memo reportedly concluded that Russia likely played a role in helping Iran target regional CIA facilities. A regional official familiar with the document shared details but requested anonymity.
Two Western officials said analysts believed the Saudi Arabia attack involved modified versions of Iran’s Shahed drones that included Russian enhancements.
According to the officials, one drone reportedly damaged a vulnerable section of the embassy’s exterior, allowing another drone to enter the area and explode. No deaths or injuries were reported.
Sources also claimed that Russia helped Iran improve the accuracy of Shahed-136 drones by providing the Kometa-M satellite navigation system. Experts believe the system offers better accuracy and stronger resistance against electronic interference.
Russia has previously denied reports about providing such technology to Iran.
US Raises Concerns Over Regional Security
US intelligence concerns increased after additional Iranian strikes targeted American forces in the region. Analysts are examining whether Russia could have provided intelligence support for attacks against US military locations.
However, some officials remain uncertain about the extent of Russia’s involvement. They noted that Iran may have targeted broader US facilities rather than specific CIA locations.
Some analysts believe only a limited number of countries have the ability and motivation to provide such advanced targeting support.
Daniel Hoffman, a former CIA station chief, said Russia’s cooperation with Iran would not be unexpected due to their strategic partnership.
“They share an interest in trying to reduce or eliminate U.S. influence altogether in their self-designated spheres of influence,” he said.
Investigation Continues Into Drone Attack Support
The CIA declined to comment on the investigation, while Iranian, Russian, and Saudi officials did not respond to requests for statements.
US intelligence agencies continue reviewing available evidence to determine whether Russia played a direct role in the attacks.
