Controversy Surrounds Confirmation of Adeel Mangi as First Muslim American Federal Appeals Court Judge

There is uncertainty surrounding the confirmation of Adeel A. Mangi as the first Muslim American Federal Appeals Court judge. His supporters claim that “Islamophobia” is the main reason behind this uncertainty, alleging that it is influencing those who are expected to support his confirmation.

Despite Mangi’s impressive credentials as a litigation attorney with degrees from Harvard and Oxford, he faces accusations of being an “anti-Semite” and associating with supporters of terrorists and cop killers. However, his supporters assert that these allegations lack evidence and are baseless attacks on his religious affiliations.

Republican senators are notably opposing Mangi’s confirmation, with Senator Lindsey Graham even urging President Biden to withdraw the nomination. Graham cites widespread concerns, including opposition from various groups and individuals, but fails to provide substantial evidence supporting these concerns.

During his confirmation hearing, Mangi faced intense scrutiny, particularly from Republican senators. He was questioned about his stance on Hamas and Zionism, with some senators implying connections to terrorist sympathizers. Despite Mangi’s clear condemnation of terrorism, the questioning continued, raising concerns about bias and discrimination based on his Muslim identity.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker passionately defended Mangi, denouncing the accusations as a witch hunt and Islamophobia. He highlighted Mangi’s exemplary character and professional achievements, emphasizing the unfair treatment he received during the hearing.

Despite initial optimism from Democratic senators, fissures emerged within the party regarding Mangi’s nomination. Senator Joe Manchin conditioned his support on bipartisan approval, while Senator Catherine Cortez Masto expressed opposition based on Mangi’s association with a criminal justice reform group accused of advocating for cop killers’ release.

However, prominent figures in the legal community rallied to Mangi’s defense, emphasizing the lack of merit in the allegations against him. Former federal Judge Timothy K. Lewis wrote a letter supporting Mangi and criticized the baseless smears targeting him.

Adeel Mangi, a highly accomplished litigation attorney, has been nominated for his outstanding legal expertise and achievements. His nomination represents a historic opportunity to diversify the judicial system, following President Biden’s commitment to inclusivity in judicial appointments.

Despite challenges and opposition, the Biden administration remains hopeful about Mangi’s confirmation. Tactical maneuvers and strategic timing could potentially sway the Senate’s decision in Mangi’s favor. However, uncertainties persist as political dynamics and external factors, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, continue to influence the confirmation process.
