Who Will Control the US Congress?

The outcome of the 2024 US election is not only about the presidency but also about control of Congress, which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, with 220 seats to the Democrats’ 212. Control of the House is determined by securing at least 218 seats. Meanwhile, the Senate is controlled by Democrats, who hold 51 seats compared to 49 for Republicans. The party with 51 or more seats controls the Senate, but in the case of a 50-50 split, the vice president’s vote breaks the tie, giving control to the party of the vice president.

Republicans are seen as having a strong chance to reclaim the Senate, especially with Democrats defending seats in conservative or swing states. Key Senate races include those in Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. On the other hand, Democrats only need to gain four seats to take back control of the House, where many districts are considered “safe” for both parties.

Overall, the fight for Congress remains highly competitive, with both sides strategizing intensely ahead of the November 5 elections. Analysts suggest the race for the House is essentially tied, and both parties are focused on critical battleground districts.
