White House Holds Subdued Ramadan Gathering Amid Criticism of Biden’s Israel Policy

The White House organized a more modest Iftar dinner on Tuesday to observe Ramadan, following some declines from invitees expressing frustrations within the Muslim community regarding the President’s stance on Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

President Joe Biden held discussions with Muslim leaders prior to a small dinner gathering alongside senior Muslim officials in his administration, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and her spouse.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters on Tuesday that “President Biden will convene a meeting with Muslim community leaders to address issues significant to the community,” clarifying that these leaders preferred a meeting over a dinner. She noted that the White House “adapted the format accordingly.”

One participant, Dr. Thaer Ahmad, an emergency room physician with experience in Gaza, disclosed to CNN that he left the meeting before its conclusion, citing a need to respect his community and those affected by the conflict. Ahmad, the sole Palestinian-American present, remarked that there was limited response from President Biden, stating, “He actually said he understood, and I walked away.”

This event stands in stark contrast to last May when President Biden hosted an Eid reception, during which he received enthusiastic applause as he declared, “It’s your house.” Notable attendees included Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, both of whom are now vocal critics of Biden’s approach to the Gaza situation.

Emgage Action, a Muslim American advocacy group, declined an invitation to Tuesday’s dinner, citing concerns over Biden’s continued support for Israel’s military actions, which they believe have resulted in a “humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions.”

Criticism from many within the Muslim, Arab, and anti-war communities centers on the administration’s backing of Israel and its military offensive in Gaza, resulting in significant casualties and a dire humanitarian situation.

Israel, as the top recipient of U.S. foreign aid, has faced international condemnation for its military campaign. The U.S. has repeatedly blocked UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire during the conflict, with the administration abstaining from a vote in late March.

Following Hamas’ attack on Israel in October, which resulted in casualties, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza. The ongoing conflict has led to widespread displacement and allegations of genocide, which Israel denies.

Meanwhile, outside the White House, Muslim and anti-war groups organized a protest Iftar in Lafayette Park, distributing dates and water bottles for breaking the fast at sunset.
