US Rushes Aid to Ukraine Amidst Growing Russian Threats: Biden Signs $95 Billion Support Package

The United States has sent ammunition, weaponry, and other essential supplies to Ukraine on Wednesday. This was made possible after President Joe Biden approved a support bill that allocated $61 billion to Kyiv out of a total of $95 billion.

The legislation was approved only after overcoming significant political obstacles. Addressing reporters, Biden emphasized the urgency of the situation and promised that shipments would commence within hours.

Immediately after Biden’s announcement, the Pentagon unveiled a $1 billion aid package for Kyiv, encompassing air defense munitions, artillery rounds, ammunition for HIMARS precision rocket launchers, anti-tank weapons, and armored vehicles.

Expressing gratitude, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lauded the swift response from Biden, Congress, and the American people, emphasizing the necessity of undermining Putin’s influence to safeguard freedom.

This assistance marks the second time the US has stepped up its aid to Ukraine this year. Previously, a $300 million package was provided in March, made feasible by reallocating Pentagon funds. Additionally, it was disclosed that long-range ATACMS missiles were discreetly sent to Ukraine as part of the March assistance, fulfilling a longstanding request.

Despite these efforts, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan cautioned against over-reliance on military aid, emphasizing the absence of a singular solution.

The signed legislation, after contentious debates, reflects a renewed commitment from Congress to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. While the US has been a consistent military ally, bureaucratic delays have hindered substantial funding for Kyiv until now.

With ongoing pressures from Moscow, Sullivan acknowledged the possibility of further Russian advances in the coming weeks.

Apart from Ukraine, the bill also earmarks humanitarian aid for Sudan, Haiti, and Gaza. Biden urged Israel to facilitate the swift delivery of aid to Palestinians in Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of addressing their dire needs without delay.
