US Expresses Interest in Strengthening Ties with Pakistan: Commits to Foster Relationship

Relationship

The United States affirmed its keen interest in nurturing its relationship with Pakistan, emphasizing a commitment to the democratic process despite challenges faced during the recent South Asian nation’s vote. As the results of the election were pending, accusations of rigging surfaced, and the caretaker government’s decision to suspend cellular and internet services heightened tensions.

Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson for the US Department of State, addressed concerns during a Washington press conference, highlighting the US focus on the democratic process and its determination to foster a strong partnership with the Government of Pakistan. Patel stressed that the future leadership of Pakistan lies in the hands of its people, reiterating the US commitment to supporting democratic principles.

The State Department has grappled with questions related to Pakistan since April 2022, particularly following the ousting of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Former Prime Minister Imran Khan alleged US involvement in his removal, a claim vehemently denied by American officials.

Amidst significant violence leading up to the general elections, with candidates and party workers targeted, Patel condemned election-related violence and expressed concern about restrictions on freedom of expression.

He highlighted the US’s ongoing monitoring of reports regarding limited internet and cellphone access on polling day.

Emphasizing the importance of democratic institutions, a free press, and civil society, Patel assured that the US, alongside the international community, would continue advocating for expanded political participation for all citizens of Pakistan. However, he refrained from making comments on official election results, emphasizing a cautious approach.
