US Administration Firmly Opposes Blasphemy Laws, Including in Pakistan

The United States administration has reiterated its steadfast opposition to blasphemy laws worldwide, including those in Pakistan, following a recent incident in Sargodha where a member of the minority community was attacked over blasphemy accusations.

During a press briefing, Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson, emphasized that violence or threats of violence are never acceptable forms of expression. He reiterated the nation’s uniform stance against blasphemy laws, regardless of where they are enforced, underscoring the importance of upholding freedom of expression and protecting minority rights.

The disturbing events in Sargodha saw hundreds of protesters targeting a Christian community, resulting in extensive damage to property and belongings being set ablaze. The first information report has named around 44 suspects for their alleged involvement in attempting to lynch a Christian man, with charges invoking sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

In response to queries about religiously motivated violence, Patel acknowledged the US’s ongoing concern, stating that such incidents are deeply troubling and warrant attention.

Regarding the recent gun battle at the Pak-Afghan border region that resulted in the loss of five Pakistani soldiers, Patel confirmed the US administration’s awareness of the reports. He highlighted the continued communication with Pakistani leaders on counterterrorism issues and regional security through various levels of engagement.

Underlining the significance of the US-Pakistan relationship, Patel expressed a commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple domains, including the economy and security. He emphasized the need for sustained dialogue and collaboration to address shared challenges and foster mutual prosperity and stability.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of economic stability and growth for both nations, highlighting the potential for enhanced cooperation in this regard. Patel expressed optimism about the prospects for continued partnership between the United States and Pakistan, emphasizing the shared goals of promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the region.
