UN Report Reveals TTP Establishes New Base in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2023

UN Report

ISLAMABAD: A recent UN report exposed that the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) established a new base in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in mid-2023. The report, submitted to the UN Security Council, outlined the TTP’s expansion, indicating a concerning development in the region.

This revelation comes despite Pakistan allowing hundreds of TTP terrorists to return earlier in a confidence-building measure, which, instead of de-escalation, resulted in the regrouping of TTP forces. The report highlighted TTP’s increased autonomy, leading to a surge in attacks and a withdrawal from peace efforts.

Furthermore, the UN report underscored the close ties between TTP, the Afghan Taliban, and al-Qaeda. It disclosed that Taliban members, including Al-Qaida fighters, assisted TTP forces in cross-border attacks. The relationship between the Taliban and Al-Qaida remains strong, with the latter maintaining a presence in Afghanistan under Taliban patronage. Al-Qaida was reported to establish new training camps in Afghanistan, posing a threat to the region.

Additionally, the report revealed a notable increase in Afghan nationals joining TTP ranks, endorsing Pakistan’s stance on their involvement in suicide attacks. The interplay between TTP, Al-Qaida, and other groups, such as Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), reflects ongoing security challenges.

The report emphasized regional concerns about collaboration among these groups, recruitment, training, and planning attacks, posing a broader regional threat.

Pakistan, in response, expressed concerns about terrorist groups finding refuge in Afghanistan and urged immediate and effective action against them. The country called for handing over the leadership of these entities to Pakistan, providing concrete evidence to Afghanistan authorities.
