UK’s Prime Minister Liz Truss steps down after remaining in office for 44 days

The United Kingdom’s newly-appointed prime minister Liz Truss today announced her decision to step down as PM after remaining in office only for 44 days.

Next week, the ruling party _ Conservative, will elect its new leader who will replace Truss as next Prime Minister of UK. In the history of UK, Truss is the shortest-serving prime minister. Earlier, George Canning held the record with 119 days in 1827, when he died.

Truss candidly admitted that she could not deliver the promises she had made with the Britishers when she was running for Conservative leader.

She said, “I recognise though, in this situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” she said.

Truss also said, “This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady and decided that the new leadership election will be completed within the next week.

Interestingly, the Conservative lawmakers put a lot of pressure on Truss to step down after she was forced to drop her economic programme.
