Ukraine has launched a major incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region, deploying thousands of troops in what is the most significant cross-border attack by Kyiv since the conflict began in February 2022. According to a senior Ukrainian security official speaking to AFP, the objective is to stretch and destabilize Russian defenses, inflict heavy losses, and create turmoil within Russia by exploiting their inability to secure their own border.
The Russian military initially reported around 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers involved in the incursion, but the Ukrainian official clarified that the actual number is in the thousands. This surprise attack has notably impacted the morale of the Ukrainian army and society, especially after recent Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.
The official emphasized that the Ukrainian forces are adhering to international humanitarian law and have no intention of annexing the areas they have entered. There are concerns about potential strikes on the Kursk nuclear power plant, but the official assured that Ukrainian forces would avoid causing any issues related to nuclear security. The International Atomic Energy Agency has called for restraint from both sides to prevent any radiological incidents.
The Ukrainian official also denied claims that Western partners were unaware of the offensive, suggesting that Western arms played an indirect role in its planning. Russia’s top general has vowed to repel the Ukrainian forces and expects retaliation, including possible large-scale missile strikes on Ukrainian decision-making centers.
