President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine had received its first batch of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets on Sunday, though he noted that more is needed to counter Russian forces effectively.
For over two years, Ukraine has been requesting these aircraft from its Western allies, as they are considered a crucial part of the military equipment Kyiv seeks.
“We often heard the word ‘impossible’. Now it is a reality. The reality in our skies. F-16s in Ukraine. We made it happen,” Zelensky declared, with some jets flying overhead during the announcement.
Standing in front of two grey, partially covered F-16s marked with the Ukrainian trident at an undisclosed location for security reasons, Zelensky expressed pride in the Ukrainian pilots who are now mastering and utilizing the aircraft.
He did not specify the number of jets delivered or their missions but did confirm that AFP journalists observed at least two F-16s on site.
This announcement comes at a critical time as Kyiv’s forces struggle to repel recent Russian advances. The arrival of the F-16s, known for their precision, speed, and range, is expected to enhance Ukraine’s defense against Russian attacks.
