UAE Introduces New Conditions for Family Iqama, Including Income and Stay Requirements

In response to evolving circumstances, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced new criteria for family iqama, aiming to ensure stability and streamline residency procedures for expatriates and their families.

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship has recently announced updated regulations governing the issuance of Iqama for the family members of foreign nationals residing in the UAE.

Under the revised guidelines, applicants seeking family residency must meet certain criteria, including demonstrating a minimum monthly income of 3,000 dirhams and providing documented proof of their place of residence.

Moreover, individuals aged 18 or older who are applying for family Iqama are now required to undergo a medical examination at approved healthcare facilities as part of the application process.

For family members already present in the emirate on a temporary entry visa, there is now an option available to convert their visitor visa to an Iqama, offering a streamlined pathway to residency status.

It’s worth noting that the conversion process to obtain an Iqama must be initiated within 60 days of the individual’s arrival in the UAE, underscoring the importance of prompt action for those seeking long-term residency solutions.

To facilitate the application process, eligible individuals can make use of the “e-channels” system or visit the official authority website to submit their Iqama applications, as outlined in the official announcement.

These measures reflect the UAE’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and transparency of its residency system while ensuring that families of expatriates can enjoy the benefits of stable and secure residency in the country.

In another related development, the UAE has introduced new regulations permitting individuals sponsored by their family members to work in the country.

Under these updated rules, dependents, including spouses residing under their partner’s sponsorship, now have the opportunity to pursue employment while retaining the benefits of their current sponsorship.

The recent amendment draws from Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Employment Relations, Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, and Administrative Resolution No. 38 of 2022, which detail the implementation guidelines for the revised regulations.

These legislative measures ensure that previously restricted categories, such as housewives, can now actively participate in the UAE’s vibrant job market.

Article 6(1)(c) of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022 stipulates that women sponsored by their husbands are eligible to seek employment in the UAE.

Accordingly, work permits for residents sponsored by their families can be issued, enabling them to work in establishments registered with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

These progressive adjustments provide greater flexibility and career opportunities for families residing in the UAE. Expatriates can now leverage their existing sponsorship while pursuing meaningful careers within the country.

This initiative resonates with the UAE’s vision of nurturing an inclusive society and empowering all residents to contribute to its development and prosperity.
