On Wednesday, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported that a high-level U.S. security delegation made a covert trip to Tehran, facilitated by Oman. According to an unnamed source from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the visit was intended to de-escalate tensions following recent assassinations linked to Israel.
The Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, citing al-Jarida, claimed that the delegation handed Iran a list of ten Mossad agents believed to be involved in recent assassinations, including that of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. This gesture was described as a “good faith” move by the U.S. in response to Israeli strikes that killed Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Haniyeh in Tehran. Al-Jarida suggested that the U.S. was distancing itself from these strikes, indicating they were conducted without U.S. coordination.
Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was killed on July 31 in Tehran during the inauguration of Iran’s new president when a missile struck the building where he was staying. This marked a significant escalation in the Israeli-Hamas conflict. Earlier, Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, linked to recent clashes with Hezbollah and retaliatory actions for a rocket attack in the Golan Heights.
These high-profile killings have intensified regional tensions, with both Iran and Hezbollah vowing retaliation.
