Two executed in Iran for desecrating holy Quran and committing blasphemy

Iran executed two people on Monday who were convicted of blasphemy and also involved in desecrating holy Quran.

Sadrollah Fazeli Zarei and Youssef Mehrdad were hanged to death on Monday morning. They were convicted over “insulting Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and burning the holy Quran”, Iranian judiciary’s online website, Mizan reported.

According to details, in March 2021, one of the two accused had confessed to publishing blasphemous content on his social media account.

Iran executes more people yearly than any other nation except China, according to rights groups, including Amnesty International.

Iran executed 75 percent more people in 2022 than the previous year. Iranian calendar year ends on March 20.

In 2022, about 582 people were executed. It is the highest number of executions in the country since 2015 and much above the 333 recorded in 2021.
