The biggest cruise ship in the world ‘Icon of the Seas’ starting its maiden voyage in Jan 2024

The world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, has faced criticism from some who have compared it to the Titanic and labeled it a “monstrosity.” Royal Caribbean International has scheduled the ship to embark on its maiden voyage in January of next year. The ship has garnered attention for its massive size.

With an internal volume of 250,800 gigatonnes (GT), the Icon of the Seas is five times larger than the Titanic, boasting a volume of 46,328 GT in comparison. Royal Caribbean International believes that this ship will revolutionize sea travel and offer a new level of experience to passengers.

Cruise

Royal Caribbean International’s president and CEO, Michael Bayley, describes the Icon of the Seas as the ultimate family vacation, highlighting the extensive effort and innovation that went into creating the ship.

It boasts seven pools, nine whirlpools, and a record-breaking water park called “Category 6” with six slides. The ship offers a range of ticket prices. The cheapest starts at $1,851 for a seven-night cruise and the most expensive at $10,864.

With a capacity for approximately 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members across 19 floors, the ship’s size is comparable to that of a New York City building.

The vessel underwent its first set of tests on June 22. It included assessments of the main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, and noise and vibration levels. Although there were delays due to wind conditions, the tests were completed on schedule, according to a company statement.

The ship faces criticism online

Online critics have expressed negative views about the ship. They have emphasized that its larger size does not necessarily equate to a better experience. Some described it as a nightmarish vision. Moreover, they also expressed feelings of intense dread upon seeing pictures of the Icon of the Seas. People hold divided opinions on the ship, with some expressing concerns or dissatisfaction with its concept and scale.
